Microsoft Word is the market leading word processing application from Microsoft. It was originally written by Richard Brodie for IBM PC's running DOS in 1983. Later versions were created for the Apple Macintosh (1984), SCO UNIX, OS/2 and Microsoft Windows (1989). It became part of the Microsoft Office suite in 1995.

The table below lists the various versions of Word for Windows that you may encounter.

1	1989	Version 1 for Windows was released.
2	1991	Version 2 for Windows was released.
6	1993	The third version of Word for Windows was renumbered "6" to bring the version numbering in line with that of the DOS version, Macintosh version and also WordPerfect, the main competing word processor at the time.
7	1995	Known as Word 95 this release was bundled with the Office 95 suite.
8	1997	Known as Word 97, this was part of Office 97.
9	1999	Known as Word 2000, this was part of Office 2000 offering.
10	2001	Known as Word 2002 or Word XP, this was part of Office XP.
11	2003	Known as Word 2003, this is part of Office 2003 suite.
12	TBC- early 2007	When Word "12" (Word 2007) arrives sometime in the first quarter of 2007 it looks as if it will represent a BIG step forward - probably the largest for 8 years. Based on the early beta version of the product although the interface will radically change, with for the first time Word, Excel and PowerPoint sharing a common look-and-feel, a lot of the underlying features and commands should remain the same. We anticipate that experienced users are in for a steep learning curve, Once the initial shock of relearning where to find functions wears off, Microsoft hopes that Word users will be able to find functions faster, change formatting more easily, share files seamlessly and manage sensitive data better in this new release.
