QuarkXPress has long been the dominant application for the professional design of magazines and brochures.  While QuarkXPress is still the market leader, Adobe InDesign - launched as a direct competitor  - has been outselling Quark since 2002.
Quark Inc. was founded in 1981 in Denver, USA,  by Tim Gill and initially developed word processing software for Apple II and Apple III systems. The first version of Quark's desktop publishing application, QuarkXPress, was released in 1987. Gill left the company in 2000.
After releasing QuarkXPress version 3.3, Quark had a history of doing relatively infrequent new versions and when they did release new versions pricing them at a high level. This, combined with the public perception of former CEO Fred Ebrahimi's poor attitude towards the customers, has resulted in a strong negative feeling among many of Quarks customers - which seems to explain why Adobe has found it relatively easy to woo Quark customers to try their competing software. The release of QuarkXPress 5 in 2002 led to row with Apple who threatened to no longer endorse Quark products if they did not support Mac OS X.
Since 2004 Quark has changed its pricing policies and released more frequent updates, the last one 6.5 was even free of charge!
The table below lists the various versions of QuarkXPress that you may encounter.
