Released in 1992, Microsoft Access has today risen to assume the position of database of preference for Windows database development.
Intended from the outset for the modern Windows environment, Access is a Relationship Database Management System (RDMS). Unlike similar database applications, such as Firefox and Paradox, it is not bogged down by the baggage associated with the pre-Windows environment.
Due to its ease of use and powerful design tools, Access is primarily used by small businesses, within departments of larger organisations and by non professional  / hobbyist programmers. However it does not scale well if data access is via a network where more than a handful of people require access. In situations like this it is preferable to rely on a Client Server based solution such as Microsoft SQL, MySQL, or Oracle .
With the up and coming release of Access 2007 it will shortly enter it's eighth reincarnation. As history clearly shows the application just keeps on getting stronger and  better with each new version released.

The table below lists the various versions of Access for Windows that you may encounter.
